The Passover Seder Plate

This is the traditional arrangement of the Seder Plate.. I picked up on the internet.

The Passover Seder Plate (ke’ara) is a special plate containing six symbolic foods which have special significance to the retelling of the story of the Exodus from Egypt. The seventh symbolic item – a stack of three matzot.
Here is the Passover Seder Plate I made for Monday Night’s Seder with Mike and his Children.

Passover Seder 2010

The 6 items on the Seder Plate – and what I made:

  • Maror and Chazeret:  For maror, many people use freshly grated horseradish or whole horseradish root.  I USED HORSERADISH SAUCE. Chazeret is typically romaine lettuce, whose roots are bitter-tasting.  I USED ROMAINE LETTUCE.
  • Charoset: A sweet, brown, pebbly paste of fruits and nuts, representing the mortar used by the Jewish slaves to build the storehouses of Egypt. I USED THE CHAROSET MIKE MADE WITH DATES & ALMONDS.
  • Karpas: A vegetable other than bitter herbs, usually parsley… WHICH IS WHAT I USED. FOR DIPPING I BROUGHT OUT A DISH OF WHITE WINE VINEGAR.
  • Zeroa: A roasted lamb bone, symbolizing the korban Pesach (Pesach sacrifice), which was a lamb offered in the Temple in Jerusalem and was then roasted and eaten as part of the meal on Seder night.  I ROASATED 5 LAMB CHOPS IN OLIVE OIL AND SEASONINGS.
  • Beitzah: A roasted egg, symbolizing the korban chagigah (festival sacrifice) that was offered in the Temple in Jerusalem and was then eaten as part of the meal on Seder night. I ACTUALLY BOILED 6 EGGS.

Once the Seder was complete, we brought out the Matzo Ball Soup, Cucumber & Tomato Salad, Rice, and Polo Horesht.

I had never made Matzat Ball Soup… and took the liberty of pulling up the recipe online. Then I realized I didn’t have the Matzat Meal to make the Matzat Balls… so I had Mike go out and get it from the store.

Matzo Balls:

Ingredients:

2 Eggs

1/4 Cup Olive Oil

Contents of Matzo Pkg

 Matzo Ball Broth(Vegetable Soup):

10Cups Water

2Onions, Cubed

3Garlic Cloves

3Carrots

3Celery

2Potatoes w/skin

1Cup Parsley

1Bay Leaf

1Tsp. Thyme

1Tsp. Basil

2Cups Broccoli

2Cups Cauliflower

Directions: Bring Soup to boil and drop rolled pieces of Matzo Balls into water. Let Simmer for 30 minutes on low heat  and serve.

The Seder was very nice…. we read from the books and performed the Seder as close to the tradition as we could.

For the meal, I had some Mazto Ball Soup, Basmati Rice and Cucumber & Tomato Salad.

I had a scheduled Mammogram appointment this Thursday morning… and did it hurt. I do have to say though; it didn’t hurt as bad as it did last year. I asked the technician giving the Mammogram, do you think I could have lost weight in my breasts and that’s why it doesn’t hurt? And she replied, it could be! It just so happens; I did lose about 5 inches in my breasts!!!

Afterwards, I met up with my girl Robin at Panera Bread for lunch. I had my usual, Vegetable Soup and a Greek Salad with no Feta Cheese. This afternoon, I tried and Iced Green Tea and it was good. It tasted really sweet, so I’m wondering now just how much sugar was in that drink????

I came home to find Mike packing to drive up to Washington D.C. Friday EARLY morning. So it was all about packing and getting things ready. For dinner, I had some Minestrone Soup with some Naan Bread (White Flat Bread) and the bread is still weighing heavy on my tummy.!! 😦

This isn’t the best thing to do… because the longer the Juiced vegetable sits in it’s juiced state the less nutritious it is. But I don’t want to get up before 5am to Juice, so I pre juiced my vegetables tonight for the road tomorrow.

I ended up eating leftovers… because I didn’t feel like making anything. Today’s become a very lazy day for me.

I ate the Vegetable Soup Mike made over the weekend with a piece of Whole Wheat Bread.

Then for the dessert… I had a bowl of Blueberries and Black Berries with a scoop of Serbert and the last of the Whipped Cream. Then I had another bowl of Berries with another Scoop of Serbert.

Bad day all around>!>>>!>!>

Mike’s wanted to see the movie “Everybody’s Fine” with Robert DeNiro since it came out the beginning of December. Well, last night he made me look up where the movie’s playing. I found out it’s only playing in Shirlington, a suburb next to Alexandria and Pentagon City.

So after Ice Skating, we got in the car in our search for something to do indoors and agreed on the movie. By the time we got there, found out it was playing at 4:45pm. Well it was only 2:45pm, so went drove over to Tyson’s Mall to walk around and decided to take in “Up In The Air” with George Clooney. Good movie… funny, relevant, and just plain nice.

Sitting at home in the comfortable, warm shelter from the freezing cold outside, Mike’s waiting for 60 Minutes to come on and I’m going to head downstairs to eat some more of that Vegetable Soup. It’s just the thing to warm me up and energize me for Sunday Night line-up of shows. 60 Minutes, Home Makeover Edition, Desperate Housewives, and Brothers & Sisters. They’re all supposed to be new episodes tonight, and I can’t wait!!!!!

But before that… it’s Sunday Vegetable Soup and some Whole Wheat Bread and afterwards some Vedge Juice.

Freezing cold and windy, that’s my forecast for the day. I woke up with just about every inch of my body aching from my Pilates workout. I didn’t mind, infact, it took my mind off my back pain and made me feel like I’m putting a dent into this body of mine.!

Got out of bed fairly late, later than usually and so we got ready for the day and hung out in the living room. Mike had already made two different types of soups and I ate the Vegetable Rice Soup he made with all the left over Veggies and Rice in the refrigerator. I sprinkled in some Whole Wheat Bread and chowed down. It was very delicious… makes me very jealous that Mike’s able to make food at a drop of a hat like this.:(

Vegetable Rice Soup:

5 Celery

4 Yellow Onions

3 Potatoes

3 Parsnips

2 Cans Diced Tomatoes

1/2 Bag Spinach

1Cup Rice

1Can Kidney Beans Canned (drained)

Directions:

Put water chopped up vegetables, spinach, beans, diced tomatoes, and rice all into pot and place in crock pot for 1 hour.

Even thought it was 24 degrees and windy outside, Mike decided to take us ice-skating. I said, lets go! So we took a drive to Reston Town Center and parked near the skating rink set up in the open area of the mall. We went into the information area where they were selling tickets and skates, and sure enough, I took my boots off and told the girl size 9. I was sad Mike didn’t buy a ticket, but that’s to be expected. He’s not much of a sportsy guy. But that’s O.K. his son and I took to the ice until I got my ice skating legs… and by that time, we were icicles from the blasting wind and very chilly temperatures. So, we got off the rink and headed over to Panera Bread for a nice Hot Chocolate.

Maybe my ticket was called, when I indulged in some Sherbet Friday night at the movies.?? Or did it start earlier than that, when I was dipping into the Whipped Topping with my Fresh Fruit Desserts???

Anyway you cut it, I’m laid up with back pain making getting around slower than usual.:( And it also means, I’m not hitting the Pilates Gym (since Thursday) getting my usual cardio workout and physical exercise. So eating has somewhat fallen by the wayside.:(

Mike and I have been making some hearty soups to eat, to help beat the colder temperatures and I’ve been tossing my Green Salads. We’re using all the Vegetables and goodies we’re buying at the Costco and Giants Grocery Store, but it’s the extras that are getting me down.

Monday night, I indulged in a bowl of Strawberry Ice Cream.
Sunday afternoon, I indulged in a block of Hershey’s Chocolate with Nuts and a spoonful of Peanut Butter. This was a repeated snack from Saturday Night. I just had the urge for chocolate (and there’s a reason why!)
In addition to all these indulgences I’ve also been over doing it on the Whole Wheat Bread and taking extra servings of all these great soups.

Mike’s Minestrone (Vegetable) Soup:
He called it Minestrone Soup with out the noodles. I didn’t make either, so I’m just going to list the ingredients.
Cabbage
Carrots
Parsnips
Yellow Onions
Spinach
Zucchini
Squash
Tomato Paste
Diced Tomatoes

Mike’s Barley & Carrot Soup:
He actually told me he got the idea to make this soup after he read my Raw Recipe Cook Book. After reading the Lentils & Barley Soup Recipe and the Carrot Soup Recipe he made this version.
Barley
Potato
Garlic
White Beans
Carrots
Lentils
Onions
Cabbage

We pushed through all day Friday… and into the when. When we finally got into Potomac, MD at 1am. It was rough!!! I was sneezing and coughing and blowing my nose every five seconds. And to top it off, I was driving. 😦

We left Albuquerque, NM Thursday morning with temperatures in the teens… Yikes! It had been way too long since I was in temps that cold. But Mike was driving and we made it into Amarillo as the sun started to peak out of the clouds and warm things up.

We stopped off at Wendy’s for a Baked Potato and Green Salad. I immediately ate the Baked Potato and held off on the Green Salad until later…. we ended up sleeping in Little Rock, Arkansas.

From which we left early in the A.M. Friday morning… there was a Starbucks right next door to the Hotel, and I couldn’t resist the temptation of a Pumpkin Spiced Latte with Soy Milk…. From there we pushed into Tennessee where we stopped for lunch. I wanted so much to eat fast food, but we actually found a Panera Bread place. That’s where I warmed right up with a Vegetable Soup and Green Salad with an Apple on the side. That was a very refreshing lunch, from which I got up to take my empty plates to the trash, when I hit the dividing wall and dropped the soup bowl on the floor. It made the loudes crash… for which I was completely imbarressed.

Moving on,… for the rest of the journey to drove in the dark and only stopped for gas and to switch drivers. I ate my Apple from lunch and had some Almonds and drank alot of water. Finally, we made it!!!
